Born Boxing Day 1946. Educated at Chatham Technical School and later the Medway College, gaining an HND in Mechanical Engineering and was brought up in Gillingham.

Moved to Sittingbourne, where he married Susan. Married for 36 years they have one son, a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, twin daughters, who are both teachers, and two grandsons. He is the owner of a vehicle accident repair company, a family business, established in 1945 by his father. He enjoyed some eleven years as an active member of Gillingham Round Table.

Craft Masonry
He was initiated, a third generation mason, into the Manor of Gillingham Lodge No. 3983 in April l968, by his grandfather, who was 84 at the time, and was installed their Worshipful Master in 1979. Subsequently, Martin was their DC/ Preceptor for 13 years thereafter. Served as a Provincial DGDC from 1989 until 1996. He was the W.M. of the East Kent Masters' Lodge No. 3173 in April 2002 and also W.M. of the Pentalpha Lodge of East Kent No. 8535 in November 2002.

Royal Arch Chapter
Exalted into the Triangle Chapter No. 184 in January 1979, and was their MEZ in 1998, having already been MEZ in the St. Mary's Gillingham Green Chapter No. 6499 in 1992, and was their Scribe E. for 5 years. He is also a member of the East Kent First Principals Chapter No. 3931, where he is their DC, and a member of Radnor Chapter 2587. He was the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies for the Holy Royal Arch in East Kent for eight years. In 2007 he was appointed the Second Provincial Grand Principal for East Kent.

He is also actively involved in many side degrees. Amongst his hobbies and interests are walking, classic car enthusiast, philately, motor sport, general interest in music and ornithology.
