Assistant Provincial Grand Master
Worshipful Bro. Brian William Powell PSGD

W. Bro. Brian Powell was born in Shropshire in 1944. He spent the first half
of his schooling in Darjeeling 7500 feet up in the Himalayas, in India, and
the second half at Shooters Hill Grammar School in London. After completing a
two-year Higher National Diploma at the London College of Printing and Design,
Brian started a printing and publishing company. He formed his own company in
London and then moved with his business to Dover in 1966, where he has
remained ever since. He is married to Julie and he has one son, David, who is
an active member of his business.
Brian’s masonic career started in 1972 when he was initiated into the Empress
Lodge No.7939 (West Kent). He then joined The Military Jubilee Lodge No. 2195
in Dover, in 1974 and became master in 1982. He was appointed Director of
Ceremonies in 1993. He joined the Military Jubilee Chapter and became First
Principal in 1992.
Brian was a founding member of The Cornwallis Lodge of Installed Masters No.
9515 in 1993. He is also a member of The East Kent Masters Lodge No. 3931, The
Kent Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge No. 5866, and The East Kent Provincial
Grand Stewards Chapter 5866.
In Craft Masonry, he was appointed as a Provincial Grand Steward in 1988. In
1991 he was promoted to Provincial Senior Grand Deacon. In 1997, he was
promoted to PPrGSuptWks, and on 14 April 2000, was made Provincial Junior
Grand Warden (Province of East Kent.)
In the Royal Arch Chapter, he was appointed as a Provincial Grand Steward in
1998 and in 2004 was promoted to Past Prov. Asst. Grand Director of
Ceremonies.
In 2004 he was promoted to Grand Rank as Past Assistant Grand Director of
Ceremonies in the Craft and promoted to Past Senior Grand Deacon in 2008. In 2007 he was promoted to Grand Rank in the
Chapter as Past Grand Standard Bearer.
At the Provincial Grand Festival at Margate on Friday 20th. April 2007, W.Bro.
Brian was appointed as Assistant Provincial Grand Master in the masonic
Province of East Kent.
He is the Chairman of the Dover Masonic Hall Co. Ltd. (elected 1997)
Outside of freemasonry, one of Brian’s hobbies is flying light aircraft. He
has held a Private Pilots Licence with full instrument rating since 1978 and
has had shares in a number of single and twin engine aeroplanes. He has also
made a study of aviation meteorology. His other great interest is walking.
Together with his son David he has walked the Pennine Way (approx. 275 miles)
and Hadrians Wall (90 miles) and other walks, all in aid of The Teenage Cancer
Trust). He also enjoys sailing and canal boating.
