Assistant Provincial Grand Master

Worshipful Bro. Nicholas Paul Philip Waller PJGD

Personal

Born in Gillingham in 1955, Nick was educated at Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School, Rochester. After leaving school, he started work with Barclays Bank International as a management trainee in 1974. In a banking career spanning almost 30 years, he saw service in most areas of the bank, his last position being as a Senior Manager in Corporate Banking Finance. During his time in the bank, Nick had a strong interest in personnel issues, passing his personnel management qualification in 1992, and serving as a trustee director of the Barclays’ pension funds for nine years.

Nick took early retirement from Barclays in 2003, but felt he could bring some of his business skills to public service. He secured the role of School Business Manager at Bradstow School in Broadstairs, a residential special school for severely autistic young people. During his time there, he saw through a number of major initiatives, most notably helping the school to attain top marks in the European quality management awards.

Nick retired from Bradstow at the end of 2008, to concentrate on some of his voluntary roles, including treasurer of three charities.

Nick is now married to Chris, and between them they have four children, all working, and one granddaughter. Aside from family, Nick and Chris spend as much time together as possible sailing their yacht around the East Coast and English Channel. Ashore, they enjoy coastal walks in many parts of the country.

In the Craft, Nick was initiated by his father in law into De Shurland Lodge No. 1089 in 1989. He served as Charity Steward from 1992, relinquishing this post when he became Master in 1999, was the Lodge’s Treasurer from 2002 to 2005. A founding member of Millennium Lodge of Charity in East Kent No 9730, Nick served as Treasurer from 2008 to 2010. He is also a member of the Kent Provincial Grand Stewasrds’ Lodge No 5866, where he has been Treasurer since 2007. Further afield, Nick joined Loge Arauna No. 281, Brielle, Netherlands (who are twinned with De Shurland), as an “Extraordinary” (country) member in 2000. He also has a number of honorary memberships.

In the Holy Royal Arch, Nick was exalted into Macartney Chapter No 1967 in 1990, becoming First Principal in 2004. He served as Scribe E in 2010.

As far as the Province is concerned, Nick was appointed Provincial Grand Steward in 2003, and was promoted to Provincial Junior Grand Warden in 2007 and Assistant Provincial Grand Master in 2010.

In the Provincial Grand Chapter, he was appointed Past Provincial Grand Standard Bearer in 2010

Outside of these Provincial appointments, Nick has also served as Deputy Treasurer of the East Kent Provincial Charities Association, and was appointed Chairman of the Management Committee of the Association in 2010, overseeing its orderly dissolution in 2011.

In Grand Lodge, Nick was appointed Past Junior Grand Deacon in 2010

Beyond the Craft and Chapter, Nick is also active in a number of other orders, including Mark Masonry, Royal Ark Mariners, the Allied Masonic Degrees and the Rose Croix.

On his appointment to Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Nick was asked to take responsibility for benevolence and charity, utilising his experience in the field both inside and outside Masonry.

In September 2011, he was asked to accept the new brief of People and Membership. Nick is relishing this exciting challenge, and looking forward to working with many Brethren to develop ways of looking after Freemasons and their dependants “from cradle to grave”.
