Personal
Born and raised in Dover, Richard attended the Harvey Grammar School at Folkestone.
He married Chris in 1968, they have two sons and four grandchildren, two boys and identical twin girls.
On leaving school Richard completed a five year apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering with the Ministry of Defence.
Preferring to work with people rather than machines, in 1968 he chose to leave engineering and to join the Prison Service
spending most of his service within the eleven Kent Prisons. His interest in people and their behaviour led him to
specialise in the management and treatment of prisoners with physical and mental illness. Having gained a degree level
qualification in Management he was accepted a Member of The Chartered Management Institute. He retired in 2004 having
for some years managed a large Prison Healthcare Unit providing care and containment for this particularly challenging
section of the prison population.
Interests
Hobbies and interests over the years have included:
Rowing,
Judo,
Rough shooting,
Sub Aqua: he is a qualified Sports Diver with the British Sub Aqua Club.
Bird and Animal watching, countryside pursuits in general.
First Aid, having maintained his First Aid qualification since the mid 1970s.

Craft:
Initiated in The Snar Gate Lodge No 6770 in April 1975, having been proposed by his father.
Joined The St Augustine Lodge No 972 in 1979, becoming WM in 1992 and serving as Secretary from 1994 to 2009 and Assistant Secretary since 2009.
Founder member of The East Kent Scriveners Lodge No 9622, WM in 2009.
Joined East Kent Masters Lodge No 3931 where he is currently Assistant Secretary.
Appointed PPrSGD in 2000 and promoted to PPrGReg in 2006.
Chapter:
Exalted into the St Augustine Chapter No 972 in 1981
Joined Military Jubilee Chapter No 2195 in 2007, installed as Third Principal in 2009.
Provincial Office:
Has been a member of the Provincial Secretariat since 2005 and had specific responsibility
for the management of Long Service Certificates, PGM’s Dinners with WMs and Zs, and Membership referrals.
Appointed Provincial Deputy Grand Secretary 2010.
