Thanet Branch of Riding for the Disabled is located in the grounds of Maurice House (a British Legion Home) in Broadstairs. The branch has five horses and provides riding for 53 disabled riders every week. This requires the help of 17 dedicated, unpaid volunteers working under the guidance of the organiser, Nora Setterfield. In order to function the Centre needs a budget of £14,000 per year and particular circumstances can place a strain on the budget.

Lewises Lodge No.1209 at Ramsgate assisted with the purchase of a small pony called Lucy (now known by all as ‘Lucy Lewis!’) and with the vets fees and disposal fees on the tragic death of Mac, a fine chestnut gelding. A replacement for Mac was offered to the centre free of charge, but Etty (short for St Etienne) had a bad leg and needed veterinary treatment. Etty is only eight years old and with the light work required could have a long and useful life with the centre. Being a large horse she could take adults with ease but she needed a saddle. Lewises Lodge donated the sum of £750, which paid for the vets fees, purchased the saddle and also helped with the purchase of hay for the winter.

We keep in touch with the centre by visiting regularly and reporting to our Brethren on the good work carried out. The joy on the faces of these disabled riders is a true blessing for us who are privileged to give.
