CONCERN FOR CHERNOBYL CHILDREN |

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED
Children from Belarus are still suffering from the Chernobyl disaster which occurred in 1986.
Every year a group of children are brought to the UK for one month's recuperation.
Could you offer a child a holiday? You will find it a very rewarding experience.
W.Bro. Charles van der Veken of Cobham Lodge No. 7269 of the Gravesend centre seeks help for Concern for Chernobyl Children a North Kent based charity which brings groups of children from Belarus to stay with local families for a four week recuperative break.
The accident at the nuclear power plant in 1986 was the worst man made, peacetime catastrophe the world has yet seen. Belarus has a population of 10.2 million people; when this disaster happened 70% of the 190 tons of radioactive debris fell on Belarus; leaving devastating results and as always the children suffered the most. There has been an increase in childhood cancers, thyroid damage, chest infections and spine and bone problems since the disaster, the children live eat drink, sleep and breathe radioactive contamination in Belarus. The charity brings the children from Uvaravitchi and Kosukovka schools which are rural areas near Gomel near where the disaster happened.
The charity is a small Committee but has others who help
fund raise to get enough money to bring the children to England; it takes a
lot of work to do this; some people and organisations do help to sponsor
a child by making a donation, unfortunately the fares and expenses seem to go
up each year..
This year the charity is bringing 27 children on the 25th
July and they return on the 22nd August, they are in need of some new Host
Families, especially in the Gravesend and Dartford areas and the surrounding villages.
