A Night for St. George

Fund Raising for Manor Road

Over 50 masons and their friends, representing 16 Lodges, attended the inaugural "Festival of St. George" which was hosted by St George Abadan Lodge 6058 at Manor Road in Chatham. The worshipful master, WBro James Chespy, welcomed the guests in his usual warm way and explained the purpose of the festival was to celebrate England in general and St. George in particular.

The evening took on the air of a "Last Night of the Proms" when the Medway Concert Brass Band included Jerusalem and Rule Britannia in their repertoire. Those attending almost took the roof of the building with the gusto that they put into the singing. The band was so good that they have been asked to perform again.

The after dinner speaker, Peter McConnell, amused all those assembled with stories from his 31 years in the Customs and Excise Service. St. George Abadan Lodge plans to host the event annually and the 2011 festival of St. George will be on Saturday 2nd April, so early booking is essential.

Following the event, many of the guests said that it was one of the best meetings that they had been to in a long time. The Worshipful Master said he was pleased that "the evening went well and that everyone had enjoyed themselves, as that is what Freemasonry is all about". He also said that "next years event will improve on this year's".

Nearly £300 pounds was raised from the raffle and other games, to go to the building fund in order to maintain the fabric of the Manor Road site.
